PRESS RELEASE - Tucson, AZ: January 7, 2002

Thirty People Start A Healthful 2002 At Tucson Conference On Intestinal Health Through Diet!

Thirty people attended a three-day Conference On Intestinal Health Through Diet last weekend. Sponsored by Tucson-based Intestinal Health Institute (www.intestinalhealthinstitute.com) and SCDiet.org (www.scdiet.org), this exciting and informative event encouraged family members, health practitioners, and those who suffer to gain a greater awareness about the importance diet plays in achieving and maintaining intestinal health. Discussion focused upon dietary change as path to improved intestinal health for people suffering from Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, cystic fibrosis, Celiac disease, diverticulitis, chronic constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. One-third of the attendees came to Tucson from New York City, Minnesota, Indiana, California, Texas, Arkansas, and Scottsdale and found the information they were so desperately seeking.

The Conference started with a keynote speech by Tucson-based intestinal health expert Sheila Shea, M.A., L.M.T., B.F.A. Sheila's stimulating presentation, "Intestinal Health Through Diet", explored the effect of complex carbohydrates on the intestinal health of people suffering from IBD, IBS, Celiac disease, diverticulitis, and chronic constipation. Ms. Shea's keynote speech was followed by highly stimulating question and answer session.

On day two, four panelists described how they are using the Specific Carbohydrate Diet to support healing in Crohn's, IBS, chronic constipation, and Celiac. Further interactive discussion with audience members shed new light for all. Audience members then organized into subgroups by health issue and attended a workshop to share tips, discuss areas of concern, form support groups, and develop an action plan for reducing flare-ups and improving intestinal health in 2002 and for life. Attendees of an optional event titled "The Efficient SCD Kitchen" learned about menu preparation, cooking, and kitchen management, followed by a feast of healthful foods.

Day three started with an Acu-yoga workshop by Tucson-based acupressure and yoga expert Lucy Ann McWilliams. Attendees benefited from this fun, hands-on workshop and learned about self-administered breathing techniques, pressure points, and kinesiology as related to intestinal health. The meeting room filled with great energy and warmth as the morning continued! Next, Ms. Shea conducted a very informative workshop on intestinal massage and colon hydrotherapy.

Everyone considered the event a tremendous success, and we look forward to another event! Additionally, a Tucson support group for intestinal health has formed and will meet every 4-6 weeks. If you or a loved one suffers from IBD, IBS, or Celiac disease and would like to receive more information about this support group, contact Michael Simons at PO Box 65227, Tucson, AZ 85728, or Sheila Shea via http://www.intestinalhealthinstitute.com.
