Subject:

Lactase Milk (Lactaid)

Question:

Is milk treated with Lactase allowed on the SCD?

Elaine writes:

Lactase milk is allowed in small amounts in tea or coffee when all symptoms are gone. Because it is drunk quickly and contains two sugars: glucose and galactose, and because the liver is often not working 100% in people with IBD, the research including me, do not want you to load the bloodstream up quickly with both galactose and glucose. With yogurt, you generally (unless in a milkshake) eat it more slowly (rate is the consideration here) and only have glucose and lactic acid entering the body at the same time. The lactic acid from yogurt is more quickly dispenses with by the cells and will not build up as quickly as it would if it were a six carbon sugar.
